A Ticking Time Bomb: A Demand Change
"We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it." according to President Obama. It is only when the last tree will fall, the rivers run dry, the last fish caught that humans will realize that they cannot eat money. Is it a matter of insolence or just pure ignorance?
the global average temperature increase to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels (150-1900), according to United Nation Climate Change Official Website. To keep Earth livable, to prevent extreme weather and to avert environmental disasters, this necessitates drastic emission cuts, aiming for a zero net carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. While the 1.5°C has not yet breached as a long-term average, latest reports on temperature spikes are only birth pains on what is actually in stored. According to scientists, the world only have about three years to avoid crossing that critical global warming boundary. The 1.5°C threshold is a point of no return, the edge of the abyss. We're walking on a tightrope amidst the chasm of climate chaos.
exacerbates these impacts, creating high vulnerability, making Filipinos more susceptible to the adverse effects of climate change. The ripples often include rising sea-levels, extreme and frequent weather events, changes in rainfall patterns, which further impacts the Philippines agriculture, economic, social, and health sectors. Natures' black tide is not the sole culprit, we ourselves hold the scissors. The inaction, the paralysis of broken promises. Loopholes in environmental laws become gaping wounds, exploited by those who prioritize profit over preservation. Corruption is like a poisonous vain, killing them from the inside out. Ultimately, silencing the voices of those who cry out for change. We build on a sinking core, putting our futures on the line, and wonder why the storm keeps coming back.
Even amidst of all this tenacity, there's still hope. We have the capability of reconstructing our fractured panorama. Perhaps a metamorphosis of realization, bold faith, and collective reawakening to the urgency of our dilemma. We are the stewards of this earth, now is the time to act, to be held accountable.
